ニューヨーク・ブルックリン発、ダンスミュージックの礎を築いてきたレジェンドKENNY DOPE の来日ツアーが決定。
東京は渋谷MIDNIGHT EASTに出演！
NYCブルックリン出身のDJ/プロデューサーであり、USハウスにおける最重要デュオMASTERS AT WORKの1人としても知られるKENNY DOPEのジャパンツアーが決定し、その東京公演が5月9日（土）に渋谷MIDNIGHT EASTにて開催される。
1990年に結成し、これまでに3回のグラミー賞ノミネート歴があるLouie VegaとのプロダクションユニットMASTERS AT WORKとして、彼らはハウス、ヒップホップ、ラテン、ジャズ、ソウルの要素を取り入れた数々のハウスヒットを生み出してきたほか、BjorkやSoul II Soul、Donna Summer、Janet Jackson、Daft Punkなど錚々たるアーティストのリミックスを手がけてきた。また、ヒップホップのバックグラウンドを持つKENNYはブレイクス/ビート職人としても知られ、後にUKで”ブロークンビート”と呼ばれるようになったスタイルの確立に大きな影響を与えた。MASTERS AT WORKからの派生プロジェクト、Nuyorican Soulが1993年にNervous Recordsからリリースした”The Nervous Track”は、史上初のブロークンビートのレコードの1つとされている。
近年はMASTERS AT WORK名義でLouie Vega共に来日していたKENNY DOPEだが、ソロでの来日は実に9年ぶり。彼のルーツであるヒップホップをはじめとしたハウス以外の音楽も聴くことができるだろう。追加ラインナップは近日発表予定だ。
KENNY DOPE, a legendary DJ and producer from Brooklyn, NYC, and one half of MASTERS AT WORK—one of the most influential duos in US house music history—is set to embark on a Japan tour, with his Tokyo show taking place on Saturday 9th May at Shibuya’s MIDNIGHT EAST.
As part of the production unit MASTERS AT WORK, formed in 1990 with Louie Vega (they have been nominated for three Grammy Awards), they have produced numerous house hits fusing elements of house, hip-hop, Latin, jazz and soul, as well as remixes for a stellar line-up of artists including Björk, Soul II Soul, Donna Summer, Janet Jackson and Daft Punk. Furthermore, KENNY, who has a background in hip-hop, is known as a master of breaks and beats, and had a significant influence on the establishment of the style that would later become known as ‘broken beat’ in the UK. ‘The Nervous Track’, released in 1993 by Nuyorican Soul—a side project from MASTERS AT WORK—on Nervous Records, is considered one of the first broken beat records in history.
Although KENNY DOPE has played in Japan as MASTERS AT WORK in recent years, this marks his first solo visit in nine years. Expect his selection beyond house, including hip-hop, which forms the core of his musical roots. The additional line-up is due to be announced shortly.

Four-time Grammy nominee Kenny “Dope” Gonzalez is one of the most influential DJ/producers in dance music history. As one half of the legendary duo Masters At Work alongside Louie Vega, he has shaped global dance music with a signature sound that blends house, hip-hop, Latin, jazz and soul. Together they have produced and remixed for artists including Björk, Janet Jackson, Daft Punk and Luther Vandross.
Kenny’s solo project The Bucketheads produced the global club anthem “The Bomb! (These Sounds Fall Into My Mind).” He also co-founded Kay-Dee Records with Keb Darge and runs his own label Dopewax, both dedicated to uncovering and reissuing rare funk and soul recordings.
In recent years Masters At Work produced Brian Jackson’s album Now More Than Ever, bringing together a new generation of artists to reinterpret classic works originally created with Gil Scott-Heron.
